A Safer, Stronger Main Street Is Coming to San Carlos Island
Lee County is putting $15 million toward rebuilding Main Street on San Carlos Island — the busy corridor that carries residents, visitors, and businesses between Fort Myers Beach and the mainland.
County commissioners approved the funding, drawn from federal community development infrastructure dollars, for a full reconstruction of the roadway along with a modernized drainage system. The work includes new road surface, sidewalks, catch basins, and upgraded outfalls designed to move stormwater off the street faster — improving safety, access, and reliability for everyone who uses the corridor.
The plan also covers the county’s $1.7 million purchase of the Olsen Marina property at 1100 Main Street, which will create space for a new outfall serving the Main Street drainage system.
For an island community, better drainage and a smoother main artery aren’t just nice-to-haves — they’re the backbone of daily life and a busy season. It’s exactly the kind of long-term infrastructure investment that keeps Fort Myers Beach and its neighbors moving forward.
