Some of Fort Myers Beach’s best kitchens are going head-to-head this Saturday for a good-natured food fight — and everyone on the island wins.
“Wings on the Beach,” organized by the local group What’s Up FMB, turns the island into a wing crawl on Saturday, Oct. 3. A dozen restaurants are expected to compete for the Golden Wing title, each putting up a three-wing signature special that passport holders can taste and score.
The crawl kicks off at 11 a.m. at Junkanoo Below Deck and winds through island favorites including Nervous Nellie’s, Snug Harbor Waterfront Restaurant, Smokin’ Oyster Brewery, Wahoo Willie’s, Petey’s Upper Deck, Mr. Waves Island Bar, License to Chill, Lah De Dah and The Whale. Several spots are rolling out deals for the day — three wings and a koozie for $5 at Smokin’ Oyster Brewery, three for $4 at Snug Harbor, and three wings plus a domestic beer for $6 at Wahoo Willie’s. Flavors range from garlic teriyaki to mango and chipotle.
The event wraps up at Wahoo Willie’s with a party from 5:30 to 6 p.m., where the Golden Wing champion is announced at 5:45, followed by a 50/50 raffle.
It’s another sign of how far the island’s dining scene has come — a dozen independent kitchens, open and thriving, on a single Saturday. Grab a passport, bring an appetite, and get out there.
