Fort Myers Beach homeowners who want a yard that is beautiful, low-maintenance and built for island conditions have a free opportunity this Saturday. On Oct. 3, the Master Gardener Volunteers of Lee County will present “Right Plant in Every Place on Our Barrier Island” at the Fort Myers Beach Public Library, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
The class is tailored to what actually grows on a barrier island — salt spray, wind, full sun and sandy, fast-draining soil. Volunteers will walk through how to match trees, shrubs and perennials to the right spot in the landscape, then demonstrate the Florida-Friendly Landscaping Plant Guide app, which lets you filter by ZIP code, plant type, bloom color and sun or shade requirements.
Space is limited and pre-registration is encouraged so everyone leaves with materials. Bring a phone, tablet or laptop with the plant guide downloaded to get the most from the interactive portion. To register, call the Fort Myers Beach Public Library at 239-765-8162.
Four years after Hurricane Ian, the island keeps replacing what was lost with something smarter — and a free class that helps neighbors put the right plant in the right place is a small, practical part of bringing Fort Myers Beach back greener than before.
