Sanibel Keeps Winning: Best Relaxing Destination in the U.S. and More National Honors

Sanibel Island’s comeback story keeps collecting national trophies. U.S. News & World Report just named Sanibel the Best Relaxing Vacation Destination in the country, praising its white-sand beaches and the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. The honors didn’t stop there: Expedia ranked Sanibel No. 8 on its global Island Hot List 2026 — the only U.S. island in the top 10 — and Afar magazine picked Sanibel as Florida’s most charming small town in its 50-state roundup for the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Travel site Action Network also ranked Sanibel No. 3 among the country’s safest beaches for a worry-free beach day. The SanCap Chamber says the recognition is a fitting tribute to the islands’ resilience — a destination that was rebuilding from Hurricane Ian less than four years ago is once again a headline name in travel. For visitors, that means a string of unforgettable stops: shelling along Bowman’s Beach, the one-of-a-kind Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum, “Ding” Darling’s wildlife trails and relaxed island dining.

Sanibel’s wins are Southwest Florida’s wins. From a Fort Myers Beach base, the islands are a scenic drive across the causeway — an easy day trip that pairs beautifully with a Gulf Coast getaway. If you haven’t been lately, this is the year to rediscover why the rest of the country is talking about our corner of the Gulf.
