The annual South Seas Captiva Island Triathlon is back on Sunday, Sept. 27, and this year it carries extra weight: the race is a USA Triathlon-sanctioned event and part of the 2026 USA Triathlon State Championship, drawing athletes from across the country to Lee County’s barrier islands.

The morning offers five ways to compete. First-timers can test the Super Sprint (200-yard swim, five-mile bike, 1.5-mile run), while seasoned racers can take on the Sprint Triathlon (quarter-mile swim, 10-mile bike, 3.1-mile run), the Sprint Duathlon, the Sprint Aquabike, or team up for the Sprint Triathlon Relay. Races go off between 7:15 and 7:40 a.m. at South Seas, and throughout the weekend the resort hosts activities for participants and their families — turning race day into a full island getaway.

Events like this are another sign of the islands’ momentum. A sanctioned championship race brings hundreds of visitors to Sanibel and Captiva for the weekend, fills rooms and tables, and shows off the Gulf’s emerald water and white sand to a national audience. It’s the kind of energy that keeps Southwest Florida’s comeback story going strong.
