There’s a moment in late August when Fort Myers Beach starts shifting gears. The summer crowds thin out, the water stays warm into October, and the island’s calendar fills up with the best stretch of events of the whole year. If you’ve only seen this beach in peak winter, fall is the secret season: Gulf water still in the mid-80s, room on the sand, and something happening most weekends from September through the holidays.

Here’s what’s on the calendar — the events we’re genuinely looking forward to, with confirmed dates. Save this post; it’s your cheat sheet for planning a fall or holiday trip.

September: Powerboats, pirates, and songwriters

September kicks off with a roar. The ROAR Offshore powerboat races return Sept. 11-13, when the island’s shoreline turns into a spectator grandstand for 200-mph catamarans. Bring earplugs, find a spot on the beach, and enjoy the show.

Then the island goes full pirate on Sept. 19 for Salty Sam’s Pirate Festival — a day of pirate ships, costumed crews, and kids’ activities at Salty Sam’s Marina that’s been an FMB tradition for years.

Between those two, the Island Hopper Songwriter Fest (Sept. 18-27) brings singer-songwriters to stages across Southwest Florida, including intimate sets here on the island. It’s the kind of event where you wander into a waterfront bar and catch an artist you’ll be telling people about later.

If you need a quieter night, the Island Zen sunset sound baths at the beach (Sept. 13 & 17) are exactly what they sound like — slow, calming, and best followed by a sunset walk.

October: Birds, beer, and the start of the holiday glow

Wings on the Beach (Oct. 3) is the island’s annual celebration of its feathered residents — guided walks, exhibits, and a reminder that Estero Island is a serious birding destination. Bring binoculars and a camera.

A week later, Suds & Sands Beerfest (Oct. 10) brings two of the island’s best-loved nonprofits — the Woman’s Club and the Art Association — together for a fundraiser at Bay Oaks with local brews and island company. Good beer, good cause.

And keep an eye out as the month goes on: Fort Myers Beach starts dressing up for the holidays earlier than you’d expect.

November: Lights, sand, and the season’s first big nights

November is when the island pulls out all the stops. The Second Annual Illuminations Parade (Nov. 7) turns the streets into a glowing procession of floats, lights, and music — it debuted last year to a packed island and instantly became a new tradition. Arrive early and bring the kids.

Then the American Sand Sculpting Championship returns Nov. 19-23 at DiamondHead Beach Resort — master sculptors turning tons of Gulf sand into works you won’t believe. It’s free to watch, extraordinary to see, and it goes on all week so you can catch it at a slower pace.

By late November, the holiday lights are up along Estero Boulevard and the nightly sunset ritual gets a soundtrack of carolers at Times Square. If you’re staying for Thanksgiving week, you’re getting the island at its most festive.

Looking ahead: Winter & spring

Beyond the holidays, the calendar only gets better. The Fort Myers Beach Shrimp Festival — March 13-14, 2027 — moves to a new home at Bay Oaks for its return, and it remains the island’s signature weekend: shrimp every way you can cook it, arts and crafts, live music, and a parade. If you’re planning a spring break or snowbird stay, that’s the weekend to circle.

And all season long, there’s the slow reveal happening at the beach: the rebuilt Fort Myers Beach pier is under construction and will stretch 70% longer than the original. Watching it rise has become its own spectator sport, and it’ll be the island’s new landmark for sunset strolls and fishing lines alike.

Planning your stay

The “Do We” Beach House sits about 600 steps from the sand — close enough that you can walk to the beach, the pier, and Times Square, but far enough to sleep with the windows open. Four bedrooms plus a den, a private pool and hot tub, and the dog is welcome too.
