Kayaking & Paddleboarding on Fort Myers Beach: A Paddler’s Guide to Estero Bay

There is a version of Fort Myers Beach most visitors never see. It has nothing to do with beach chairs or the umbrella-and-sunscreen routine. It happens on the back side of the island, where Estero Bay turns glassy in the first hour of daylight and the only sounds are paddle strokes, a splash, and an osprey calling from the mangroves.

Late summer is hot — no argument there. But it is also when the bay is at its calmest, and it is the smartest way to spend a morning when the afternoon thunderstorm is still hours away. Whether you have logged a hundred paddles or have never touched a kayak, here is how to get out on the water.

Why the bay, not the Gulf

The Gulf side gets the waves and the wide-open horizon. Estero Bay gets something quieter: miles of protected water, winding mangrove tunnels, and wildlife that lets you drift right up to it. The bay is shallower and warmer, which means flat water even on days when the Gulf has a chop. For a first-time paddler or a family with kids, that is the difference between a fun morning and a workout.

Where to paddle

  • The Mound House launch — A town-run kayak launch on Estero Bay at the Mound House, the 2,000-year-old Calusa shell mound site. Paddle out through the mangroves and you are on the bay in minutes. Rentals and a dock make it an easy drop-in.
  • Bowditch Point Park — At the north end of the island, with kayak and paddleboard rentals on the bay side. From here you can poke along the shoreline toward Big Carlos Pass or explore the back bays where the dolphin pods like to feed.
  • Lovers Key State Park — A short drive south, and worth every minute of it. The park rents kayaks and paddleboards and the calm-water channels behind the island are some of the best manatee-watching stretches in the area.

What you will see

Dolphins work Estero Bay nearly every day — you will hear them before you see them, a breath breaking the flat water a hundred feet away. Ospreys sit on channel markers and complain as you pass. Herons and egrets stand motionless at the mangrove edges, and if the water is clear, you will spot rays and small fish cruising the sandy bottom beneath your board. In the cooler months, manatees show up in the shallow grass flats; the summer months trade them for near-guaranteed dolphin sightings and sky-high osprey activity.

Paddle like a local

  • Go early. The bay is calmest between sunrise and 10 a.m., before the afternoon seabreeze kicks up. You also get the light for the best photos.
  • Check the tide. Around the passes and inlets, outgoing tides can pull harder than you expect. Stay inside the bay on your first time out and save the passes for when you are comfortable.
  • Take the essentials. Water, sunscreen, a hat, and a dry bag for your phone. The water is warm enough in August that you will likely want to just jump in halfway through.
  • Rent local. Rentals at the launch points above include life vests and a quick orientation, so you can show up empty-handed and still be on the water in twenty minutes.

After the paddle

Back at the house, the routine writes itself: rinse off, drop your gear by the outdoor shower, and let the private pool take care of the rest. Fort Myers Beach is one of the best paddling towns in Southwest Florida precisely because you can go from kayak to pool to dinner without ever getting in a car. The kayak launch at the Mound House is a five-minute drive from the house, and Bowditch Point is even closer.
