Fort Myers Beach is getting a piece of its old self back. The Goodz — the island’s longtime “everything store” on Estero Boulevard — will break ground on its new home Saturday, August 15, nearly four years after Hurricane Ian destroyed the original building.

Owners Graham and Meagan Belger have run the beloved store since 2013, keeping it alive since 2023 out of a trailer across the street. The rebuild has been approved since December 2024, and it’s designed to go the distance: the structure is being engineered to withstand a Category 5 hurricane.

The new two-story build is worth the wait. The ground floor will bring back the hardware-store-with-everything feel — including ice cream — while upstairs will hold a kids’ arcade and a pizza restaurant serving beer and wine. It’s a family-friendly anchor that gives visitors one more reason to spend a full day on the island.

Every business that returns to Fort Myers Beach strengthens the town’s comeback story. When The Goodz reopens, it won’t just be a store — it’ll be a sign that this community keeps showing up for itself.
