By August, most Florida beach towns have gone quiet. That’s exactly the point.

Fort Myers Beach does something subtle and wonderful in August: it hands the island back to the people who live here — and to the travelers smart enough to know what a beach town in August actually is. The snowbirds have been gone since spring. Spring break is a distant memory. The summer families have packed up for back-to-school. What’s left is a wide, white, gloriously uncrowded beach, the warmest Gulf water of the year, and our lowest rates of the season.

The beach you actually came for

In peak season, the sand between Times Square and Bowditch Point has its moments. In August, you can claim your own stretch of it. The quartz-white sand stays cool underfoot until mid-morning, and the Gulf — which reaches its warmest of the year in August — is the kind of warm you stop noticing after about ten seconds, the way a bathtub goes from too-hot to perfect.
