Clear the Shelters Returns to Lee County — Adoption Fees Waived Aug. 15

August is adoption month in Lee County. Lee County Domestic Animal Services has joined NBCUniversal Local’s Clear the Shelters campaign once again, running Aug. 1–31 — and it’s one of the most heartwarming ways to spend a Saturday in Southwest Florida this month.

Throughout August, adoption fees drop to $40 for dogs and $20 for cats with an approved application. Then on Saturday, Aug. 15, the shelter waives adoption fees entirely during Lee County’s Clear the Shelters adoption event — the perfect excuse to come meet the dogs and cats waiting for families.

The campaign pairs more than 1,600 shelters and rescue organizations nationwide. Since its launch in 2015, Clear the Shelters has helped more than 1.3 million pets find loving homes and generated more than $5.6 million in donations to participating shelters and rescues.

It matters here because Fort Myers is a genuinely pet-friendly town: dogs are welcome on leashes along Estero Boulevard, at many waterfront restaurants, and in pet-friendly rentals like our own beach house on Fort Myers Beach. Every adoption opens up space for another animal in need — and a Lee County pup gets the full Gulf Coast life.

If you’ve been thinking about adding a four-legged family member, mark Aug. 15 on the calendar. You might just meet your new best friend.
