The Fort Myers Beach Pier — an iconic landmark destroyed by Hurricane Ian in 2022 — took a major step toward returning. FEMA has approved $5.5 million for its reconstruction, clearing the way for Lee County to begin work as soon as August.

The new pier won’t just replace what was lost; it will be bigger and better. The design calls for a structure roughly 1,000 feet long and 12 feet wide — more than 70 percent longer and 50 percent wider than the original. The $11.7 million construction contract was awarded to RJ Gorman Contracting LLC back in April, and county officials say a groundbreaking ceremony announcement is coming soon.

Funding comes from a combination of FEMA Public Assistance grants, Lee County Tourist Development Tax revenue, and RESTORE Act funds tied to the Deepwater Horizon settlement. The project is expected to be completed by late summer 2027.

For Fort Myers Beach, this is more than just infrastructure — it’s a symbol of the community’s resilience and recovery since Hurricane Ian. A bigger, stronger pier means more space for fishing, sunset strolls, and the kind of waterfront gathering spot that defines this island town.
